Sermon Series for January

During the month of January, we will be focusing on Jesus’ own Mission Statements for anyone who would follow him. They are not what most institutions or corporations would create—usually some philosophical tenets with a few tasks added to flesh them out. Instead, Jesus was incredibly succinct. In a sentence or two, he gave a clear, direct call to his followers. There was nothing vague about what he desired from us.

If you are wondering what they are, here is a list of pertinent scriptures:

John 13:34-35

Mark 12:28-30

Luke 10:27

Matthew 7:12

If you look them up, you will see that they are Jesus’ commandment to love as he loved; the great commandment to love God with one’s whole being; the great commandment to love one’s neighbor as oneself; and Golden Rule of doing to others what we would have them do to us. Jesus declared that all the law of Moses and the prophets rested on these dictums. Therefore, it seems wise to review them consider what they truly mean, and then consider direct applications in our lives.

In doing so, we start the year truly centering on what Jesus calls us to be as the Church. That is a resolution truly worth keeping.
